Fall Mountain Trip

Friday morning, after Sam mowed
 some of our oats.
We headed to the mountains.
First we had to make a trip to Rhoadstar,
a tire place in quarryville.
Sam check the air in his tires
and noticed that on one tire there
was a wire sticking out so he wanted to get
it replaced before we left.
We got up there around 3.
Sam's parents also came along.
They got there around 6:30.
They stopped and got pizzas to bake on the way up.
Saturday we walked down the road the cabin is on,
to a pipe that Gabe walked through this summer.
You can't walk through it now,
too much water.

We spent some time at World's End State Park

We went to look for deer,
didn't see too many.
4 doe and 1 buck.
The boys found some turkey feathers.
We had a nice relaxing time away from home.
It is nice to get away from the farm
once in a while.
We watched movies and
played the wii.
Had a wonderful mini vacation.

Life

I haven't really updated this blog
on the happenings in our life lately.
I guess I figured it was nothing too exciting.
It seems like the boys are so busy.
They are busy going to Awanas every Wednesday night.
Learning their verses they say every week.
Gabe was so excited when he got his red sparks vest.
He had to memorize John 3:16 to get it.
Caleb is in Truth & Training again this year.
He has so much fun.


Gabe has been getting adjusted
to going to school everyday.
He seems like he is doing better everyday.
He had some issues on the bus,
but he seems to be doing better.


Sam started helping with the Jr youth group,
he teaches them twice a month.
Gabe loves to go along and play in the basement
while they do their lesson
and then he has snack with them.
Caleb had a harvest party with
the youth group this weekend,
he had a blast.
Gabe went along to drop him off,
he said when we left:
"Why does Caleb get to have all the fun."


We are getting a lot of the fall work done.
They are finishing the corn this morning.
Sam had a busy day Saturday,
he pulled bin wagon for nine hours.
Corn didn't do very good this year.
I started going to a pray group twice a month
to pray for our kids and teachers at school.
I think that is so important.


Our verses for today were:


For the word of the Lord
is right and true;
He is faithful in all he does.

 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,

The Lord is faithful to all his promises
and loving toward all he has made.

Because of the Lord's great love
we are not consumed,

GOD is faithful!


Yesterday at church we heard from Parkesburg Point,
they are doing amazing work.
It was so good to hear the testimony.
Sometimes I think we forget about the kids
that need help right around us.
We think it more in other countries.
We have kids that need support right around us.



 
Last week we lost our oldest cow.
She was almost twelve years old.
She had ten calves.
She was a very good cow.
Thankfully we just got a heifer calf from her.
We are getting some heifer calves again.
We were getting bulls calves pretty regularly.
It get depressing when all you get is bulls.

Seems like fall weather is here.
So ready for a week with no rain,
doesn't look like that is going to happen this week.

Apple Dumplings



Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 9 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 6 apples, peeled and cored
Syrup ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoon butter


Directions:

  1. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt.  Add butter, mixing until crumbly.  Gradually add milk.  I do this in the food processor and it works great.
  2. Cover and refrigerate dough for an hour or until easier to handle.
  3. Sprinkle the center of the apples with brown sugar and cinnamon.  Divide dough into 6 portions.  Roll out and wrap around each apple and place in a baking dish.
  4. To make syrup,  combine all syrup ingredients except butter.  Cook and stir for 5 minutes.  Add butter.  Pour over dumpling.  While baking the dumplings, brush with syrup.  Bake at 375 for 40 minutes.

Sparks Outing To Esbenshade Turkey Farm

On Saturday Gabe's awana group,
the Sparks, went to
Esbenshade turkey farm
for an afternoon of fun.

They played games,

Too bad Sam couldn't come along,
he had to stay home and work.



In the evening we went to Mom & Dad's
to celebrate their anniversary.

Caleb had fun playing with Bryce.



 

He likes to play Angry Birds on Sam's phone.
Alyssa liked watching him.

Jewish Apple Cake

This week I wanted to make something with apples,
since they are about ready on our trees.
The heavy rains we have been having really knocked them
off the trees, so there isn't too many this year.
I saw a recipe for an apple cake
that you have to make a carmel sauce
for on the bottom.
You are suppose to put sugar and a little
water in a pan and let it cook for 25 minutes
without stirring.
It also doesn't tell you what temp to cook it at.
Needless to say after three tries I gave up.
The first time it burnt, then the sugar got hard as
a rock, and the last time I decided I was going to stir it
and see if that worked but my spoon melted in it.
So I decided to make something I know I can make:


Jewsih apple cake



Ingredients:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 2 cups plus 5 tablespoons sugar, divided
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/3 cup orange juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 medium baking apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2-1/2 teaspoons vanilla


Directions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, 2 cups of sugar, oil, eggs, OJ, salt and vanilla. Beat until thoroughly combined.
  2. Mix remaining sugar and cinnamon together.  You can either mix the apples in the cin/sugar mixture or sprinkle it on top off the apple in the pan. (I sprinkle it on top.)
  3. Spray a 10 in tube pan. Then spread one-third of the batter in the tube pan.  Layer 1/2 of the apples.  Sprinkle some of the cin/sugar mixture.  Repeat layers. Spoon remaining batter over top.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees for 1-1/2 hours.  It might not take quite that long.  If you wish you can dust the cake with 10x sugar after it cools. (I don't.)
